Welcome to Diversity, Motivation & Learning,  a KCTL FACULTY INTEREST GROUP

 

     One common issue instructors from a wide-variety of disciplines and courses recite is a form of “how to motivate our students and improve learning, given such a diverse group of learners?”  One crucial observation is that “the solution to many motivational challenges resides within the entire school community” (Ginsberg, 2011).

 

     In response, this FIG seeks to create an environment where we can collectively create a shared instructional language using the Motivational Framework found in our foundational text: Diversity & Motivation: Culturally Responsive Teaching in College. 

The purpose of the framework is not to suggest one methodology of instruction, but to unify teaching practices so that educators can more consistently plan for student interest and engagement.  As a broad synthesis of many disciplines, it accommodates the range of ethnic and cultural diversity found here at KCC.  

 

     In terms of everyday instruction, the FIG is a guide to creating compelling and engaging lessons as well as how to construct a solution space for responding to particular challenges or forms of resistance in the classroom. If you are interested in joining us, please stop by KCTL (M-391), to pick up a complimentary copy of the hardback book, come with questions and hypotheticals and a willingness to collaborate with other faculty to overcome challenges and forms of resistance in teaching and learning.
